Trip to the Hospital

It seems that this winter Abbey has had a cold--or some 'illness'--every couple of weeks or so, but nothing too scary. Saturday night I heard her coughing in her sleep but in the morning she was happy and playing and didn't have a fever--or a cough for that matter. She was well enough to take to church and did GREAT in nursery (Eric and I were both able to make it to our meetings).

Then at 12:15am this morning I woke up to Abbey coughing and crying. At first I was just going to let Eric get up with her--I had to be up at 3am to get ready for work--but I could hear from my room how labored her breathing was. Eric brought her in the bedroom and I was immediately concerned. Abbey's breathing was very labored, it was loud and raspy and she had a fever.

I didn't want to be the paranoid mom, but in the end we decided--with the help of my mom--to take Abbey to the emergency room, 'just in case.'

Abbey did great! She didn't cry at all while we were there and let the nurses and the doctor look her over with little complaint (probably because we brought her Elmo doll and the nurses and doctor tried everything out on him first). The doctor indicated that Abbey has croup (http://pediatrics.about.com/cs/commoninfections/a/croup.htm) and gave her an oral steroid and let her go home. Because of lack of sleep and because of Abbey's fever I decided to stay home from work today. Other then being cranky--probably due to lack of sleep--Abbey is doing fine. I'm glad she's healthy and didn't need to stay at the hospital. I've decided sometimes being a mom can be scary!

That is scary. I'm glad she is okay! One of the things that I like about the doctor here is that they have an after hours clinic that is open 24/7 so that you don't have to go to the ER. Did you have to wait forever? Being a mom is scary!

Thanks for the full report. I slept through the whole thing. For good of for bad, I can't hear phones in the night. It's good that Beverly can.

Anyway, glad to hear that Abbey is doing better. Glad to hear that you were able to stay home from work. I'm especially happy that you took Abbey in.

Our prayers are with you all. Won't it be nice when spring comes? (Even Beverly has gotten sick this winter--and is sick now--and she NEVER gets sick. What's up with that?)

This has been such a bad year for sicknesses. Jeniel had an ear infection last night and just got put on antibiotics for the 5th time since November.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear that the doctors where able to figure out what was the problem and that Abbey is now starting to feel better.
